12 Nut-Free Lunchbox Ideas

A little over a year ago we found out our littlest child is extremely allergic to nuts (and sesame seeds) so our entirely house went nut-free (at least until she's old enough to know better). And now that I carry around an epi-pen wherever we go, I can absolutely relate to all the mamas worried about whether or not their allergy kids are safe at lunch time in nut-free classrooms.

My older two kids have never actually been in a nut-free classroom but I know so many moms' kids who have and it can be a struggle to veer away from your average PB&J. Here are 12 nut-free lunchbox variations I send with my kids to school (and they actually eat it).

Left: Turkey and cheese sandwich with carrots, grapes and oranges.
Right: 1/2 a turkey and cheese sandwich, strawberries, brownie Zbar, and snap peas.

Left: Cream cheese and jam bagel sandwich, strawberries and carrots.
Right: 1/2 a turkey and cheese sandwich, snap peas, apple sauce, and goldfish.

Left: Turkey and cheese sandwich, goldfish, carrot chips and apple sauce.
Right: salami, Babybel cheese, cucumber slices, carrot chips, strawberries, goldfish and a Zbar.

Left: 1/2 a ham and cheese sandwich, Babybel cheese, oranges , grapes and snap peas.
Right: Ham and cheese sandwich, grapes, cucumber slices, and cheez-it grooves.

Left: Ham and cheese sandwich, carrots, oranges and grapes.
Right: 1/2 a turkey and cheese sandwich, grapes, cucumber slices, princess goldfish.

Left: Laughing cow cheese, Ritz crackers, salami, carrots, blueberries and raspberries.
Right: Salami, Cheez-its, Babybel cheese, snap peas and raspberries.

Now, I know what you may be thinking: these are all variations of basically the same thing. Yep. They are. I believe in keeping things simple. I want to make sure my kids eat a solid lunch while they're at school. Most of the time I pack them what I know they love (i.e. Isaiah loves carrots and Maci prefers snap peas) because, well, don't you do the same for yourself?

Other things I have packed include mac 'n cheese and ramen in a thermos. My son loves ham and cream cheese pin wheels and honey and banana sandwiches.

I also love these Ziploc containers because they make packing lunches so much easier, far less wasteful, and they give my kids a plate to eat on.

  1. Great post! Here are some ideas from us:
Leftover ham and cheese stuffed biscuits (or salami and cheese, or cheese, or.... etc.)
    Leftover eggs and bacon
Nutella and eggo "sandwiches", because why not?
Homemade lunchable style lunch, similar to what you do :)
I actually rarely reach for the PB these days!

There Is Enough Time

When I became a new mom of two, my mom gifted me a book she read when she became a mom called 'There is Enough Time.' It was really old, an "original." It was written in the fifties is what I'm saying. I read most of it and nodded my head in a agreement a few times but mostly, it felt so irrelevant. Raising kids in the 50's was very different than it is now. But here's what I've noticed since I've been holed up with my kids for the last two weeks (yep, tonight is my 14 day mark), there is enough time. It's been forced upon us, yes. Something we Americans don't like - how dare the government tell us what to do? (gasp!) - it's like we got grounded because the neighborhood bully got us in trouble. But when all the "fun stuff" got canceled - the sports, the plays, the parties, the people - we were forced to reevaluate our days. It turns out, when you have nowhere to go there is enough time. Enough time to dance, to go on fam...

Am I pregnant or stupid?

I've read stories about people getting the "pregnant stupids" and while I think they're hysterical, I think I've got them...bad. All the time. Every day. My guess is that because I lucked out with morning sickness (or lack of), God decided to turn me into an idiot. Case in point. Thursday afternoon, I drove all the way home from work (about 20 minutes) only to realize I forgot my work keys, which I needed to open the office the next morning. So I had to rush back to work before my co-worker left at 5 p.m. to grab them. She looked at me like I was crazy. I told her I was. Then when I got home, Darren and I were going to meet my aunt and uncle and cousins downtown for dinner. So we rushed off to dinner and as soon as we hit the busy grid of downtown, I realized, I FORGOT MY PHONE. This would be OK any other day except for the fact that 1) I was the only one that had any of their phone numbers and 2) We didn't even designate a spot to meet - we were just going to...
